I send homemade videos each Monday to my students (now gonna go until May; I’m really sad about it) to say hi and spread some positivity. From my time with Kai, I knew I had some life advice for them to apply to their quarantined week. So, this week’s topic was “Five Lessons Learned From Kai During Isolation.”
One: Thrice this past week, Kai ran to the door with a stuffed animal (including his prized Rudolph once) for one of us to bring to Navy for the day. Lesson: think of other’s needs before your own.
Two: I felt all prideful when Kai told me I was his best friend or that he was excited to spend the day with his friend. Spoiler: he said the same things to Heather. Lesson: be a genuine friend to and with whoever you are with.
Three: We went outside a lot and each time we’d walk out, he’d sigh to himself and say “oh, what a nice day.” Lesson: start opportunities on a positive note.

Four: After being outside for awhile, I told him it was 7:50 pm. He started crying, then asked what that meant. It’s bedtime, I said. He took a big breath, then got happy and said “I love bedtime!” Lesson: readjust your perspective.
Five: A friend gave Kai some hot wheels and he’s been obsessed with them since. In the garage, amidst projects, Kai arranged the wood and made ramps. Lesson: when life gives you wood, make a race track.
As I was with Kai this past week, I was impressed with just how much joy he brought into my day. Admittedly, self isolation has been wonderful for Kai and Navy as each one gets full time and attention from a parent each day. It’s a blessing for us, too.
