Here’s a bunch of little things for the Sunday update.
? One of the blood cultures from Thursday did come back positive, resulting in a verified blood infection. We have a new team – Infectious Disease – who monitor the infection and the source. Her chest wound still looks raw and red, and we’ve noticed a bulge at certain times, so that’s the most likely source for the infection. We got an ultrasound on the wound and some fluid is accumulated under the tissue making it inflamed. We’ll go in for a CT scan tomorrow to see how deep the infection goes. The options are to continue antibiotics, or reopen the site to clean it.

? BIGGEST NEWS: Navy got a new roommate. We were eavesdropping on our new admit and he said something about a first wife, a second wife, a community, St. George AND PLURAL MARRIAGE. He hasn’t been afraid to vocalize his life situation and it makes us feel so weird. His kid is also in the same boat as Navy – Vacterl and TEF – and that makes us feel weird, too. The guy likes Coke and Heather said he and I have so much in common.
? Because of Coronavirus, the hospital is adopting a new policy that no children, even siblings, under the age of 18 will be allowed in for awhile. That news hit this afternoon, so we’re still gathering details on how long that will last. It’s not like it matters too much – Kai has a cough again.
? It was confirmed that a lymph node did get cut/hit/affected and can’t do its job to help the lungs absorb the fats. The chest tube still discharges fluid – about 50 mL/day – so we stopped feeds for the weekend. On Monday, she’ll get 1 mL of formula every hour. FYI: there are about five mL in a teaspoon.
? She went up two levels on her precedex and is getting morphine as needed in addition to a scheduled morphine. Her oxygen flow increased as well (at 8). It feels like a setback and we’re back to the same levels from a week ago, but at least Navy is comfortable and able to rest.
? Heather and I went out to dinner and a movie last night – Bombay House and Onward – which was a lot of fun. Heather just got to North Ogden around 7 pm tonight to meet up with Kai, who has been in Bear Lake with all the Edmunds clan for some snow and cabin fun. Heather has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow and then she’ll come back and we’ll switch back to our new normal.
