OGDEN — After rain delays took softball away for a few days, the Ogden Tigers didn’t skip a beat in cracking down against crosstown rival Ben Lomond in a 23-13 win Wednesday.
Right from the get-go, Ogden put its bats to use and led 4-0 after the first inning. It escalated further in the second as Ogden racked up six more runs to take a 10-1 lead. Senior Logann Thompson was part of the reason, providing aggressive running to complement the Tigers’ hitting.
“Logann is definitely our team leader,” Ogden coach Raychel Gustin said. “She brings energy and gets us up, even if she is struggling. She’s the foundation to this team.”
Case in point: Thompson nailed a single to bring home freshman Abigail Halverson. She then stole second, which diverted attention and allowed Grace Gooder to race home from third. During the chaos, Thompson hustled to third.
One batter later, she decided to bring herself home after a wild pitch.
Ben Lomond (0-6, 0-4 Region 11) wasn’t ready to go away, dominating the third inning to get back into the ball game.
After displaying patience in the box to the tune of three straight walks, the bases were loaded for Madison Kentmeister. She delivered a powerful hit down the third-base line to bring two Scots in.
Thompson, who pitches for Ogden, issued several walks and eventually seven runs in the frame, prompting Gustin to make a pitching change.
Ariyana Lyons, a sophomore, took the mound, but Ben Lomond’s Shaylee Beardall drove in two more runs. Lyons finished the inning with a strikeout and an easy pop-up to get out of the inning with a slim lead, 11-10.
“Ari had tons of confidence on the mound,” Gustin said. “She trusted her team to help her out of desperate situations and pitched a great game.”
The game slowed down in the latter innings, which favored Ogden (4-2, 4-2) as the Tigers let walks and pitching dictate the game.
Ben Lomond’s two pitchers both struggled with walks and Ogden eventually extended its lead to 20-10 in the fifth.
“I told them, ‘this isn’t the Ogden team I know.’ Pick it up!” Gustin said she told her team in the third inning that kept the game close for a time.
It worked, and Ogden cruised to victory on Ben Lomond’s field.
